Jennifer Coggins

Mrs. Coggins changed the social and academic lives of at-risk students by developing the School Within A School Jr High Program (SWS). She focused on students who had minimal academic success since early elementary school, high discipline referral rates, and very high chronic absenteeism rates. She developed the SWS program to provide an authentic learning model to build social and academic resiliency. The program contributed to increased attendance, decreased referrals, and students were making leaps and bounds with academic growth. Students became vested in school and were wanting to attend summer school before COVID interrupted the summer programs. During COVID the students had a high rate of work turned in and constant check-ins.

Along with the SWS program, Mrs. Coggins has served in many capacities at Bethel Regional High School and the district. She has been a part of the district science curriculum adoption and writing team and aided with the distribution of science supplies. She has been a Foundations/AK STEPP/Site Leadership Team Member, CHAMPS coach, and a teacher mentor/coach. Jennifer has provided instruction at district/site level/site admin in-services about instruction and programs, presented at the Alaska Principal’s conference on School Within A School, accepted to present at a National Conference about School Within A School, and has coached and sponsored various academic and athletic activities such as JrH Cross Country; UAF Science Extension Research Programs, Science Fair, ANSEP, Robotics, and started the Swim Team program at BRHS.
