Smart Start

August 6, 2020

Dear parents/guardians, students, staff, and LKSD communities:

Following direction given by the LKSD Board of Education, and informed by formal recommendations of YKHC, LKSD schools will restart/re-open on August 24th, 2020, at the medium risk (yellow) level. Individual LKSD schools will be sharing site specific plans with parents, students and communities as they are finalized.

Medium risk (yellow) level means the following:

• Pre-K-6th grade: Hybrid instructional model of in-person learning (cohort model) and

remote learning

• Middle and high school: Remote/distance learning or cohort model as applicable

• Parent choice of whether to send child/children to school in-person or to receive remote learning support from the school; if you are interested in this solely remote learning option, please contact your local school.

The cohort model of learning means:

• Students who do attend school in-person will be grouped into cohorts

• A cohort is a consistent group of students that stays together all day, each day

• There will be up to 12 students in a cohort, based on space and distancing

• Creating stable cohort groups in schools is a key strategy to reduce the spread of disease

Each school in LKSD is individual and unique and varies in student enrollment, space availability, and staffing. Each school is working to create their own site-specific Smart Start plan that aligns to the district plan and attends to site circumstances.

At the medium risk (yellow) level, the following safety measures will be in place in all LKSD schools:

• Physical distancing in classrooms, and for movement through school buildings

• Limited class sizes to maintain six feet of social distancing

• Cohort model to minimize mixing between student groups

• Staggered recess, entry and dismissal times

• Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for students and staff – this includes face coverings/masks for everyone in school over the age of two who can safely

wear a face covering, per the CDC

• Regular cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces

• Daily screening of all students and staff for signs of infection or exposure to COVID-19

• Proper ventilation; outdoor learning and activities promoted when applicable

Movement between risk levels:

On July 30, 2020, YKHC released formal recommendations to school districts in their service region. In this guidance, it was noted that YKHC does not foresee a time during the COVID-19

pandemic that school districts in their service region will be considered “low risk”.

Throughout the 2020-21 school year, LKSD senior administration will work closely with a team from YKHC to assess risk and to move our schools and/or the district between the medium (yellow) and high (red) risk levels as necessary. These changes will be communicated promptly to schools and communities via multiple methods should they happen.

Student and staff health and safety remain the top priority during this time of a global pandemic. Thank you for your support, patience, and flexibility during this unprecedented time.
