Tununak, Alaska


According to wikipedia Tununak (Tununeq in Central Yup'ik): is located southwest of Alaska lying northeast of Nelson Island about 150 air miles west of Bethel. According to the census of 2000 the population of the community had about 325 people, 82 households, and 59 families residing in the CDP.
Tununak History
Like they say Tununak is the oldest village on the Nelson Island, it has been around since the mid 1800's. On the southside of the village where the airstrip lies is an old village (Uaqllirarmiut). There are many pit holes on that ground and those pit holes use to be sod-houses.
Yuuyaraq (Way of Life)
The people in the village mainly depend on subsistence; spring, summer, and fall are the busy seasons of getting nourishment. The men in the village make sure they store enough food for their freezer for the winter.
The main subsistence foods are seal, herring fish, halibut, salmon, geese, smelts, hooligans, trout, musk ox, moose, black berries, and salmon berries.
