Procedures

 

1. Advisory School Boards and/or Site Administrators (Principals) may close a school inthe event of hazardous weather. The Principal will determine if school will be closed for the day or if classes will be delayed.

 2. All emergency school closures shall be reported immediately to the Superintendent at (907) 543-4810.

 3. Principals and staff should develop a knowledge and understanding about the characteristics of hazardous weather conditions that are specific to the region.

 4. Staff, students and parents, may be reminded to listen to local radio station/s, and to local television station/s for announcement of school closure due to hazardous weather conditions. School closure announcements may also be determined by calling _____________, for a pre-recorded school status message.

 5. The Principal will try to make the decision to close school by 5:30 a.m., and contact the local media for broadcasting the school closure announcement.

 6. Staff will be notified whether or not they are to report for work and a telephone tree/chain may be established.

 7. Principals should develop plans for checking building security and to aid students and staff who may arrive at school unaware of a weather closing.

 8. If a storm develops during the day, the primary means of warning of a severe storm or other weather related emergency will be through the local media or through a weather watch established by the Principal and staff at the school. The Principal will determine the action to be taken and advise personnel.
