Procedures

 

1. Assure protection of informant's identity

2. Determine location of responsible person/isolate person if possible

3. Call local law enforcement and school safety (Listed Above)

4. Request assistance from other adults, if needed

5. Do not attempt forcible disarming

6. If possible, accept weapon for safekeeping from person or take possession from (locker) if a student

7. Escort responsible person to Principal's Office

8. Notify parent or guardian if student involved

9. Take appropriate disciplinary action

10. Record observation of incident in detail

11. Notify Superintendent of situation

12. Record and file report on incident

 

General Rules

 

a. If careful evaluation of the situation indicates, inform the person that weapons are not allowed on school campus and request that the individual turn over the weapon for safekeeping. If the person becomes hostile, angry or upset, move to a place of safety and notify the proper law enforcement agency. Notify all students and school staff using emergency signal/bell/voice code.

 

b. Under no circumstances should any heroic attempts be made that would endanger the lives of students or staff members. Maintain a visual observation of the responsible person and inform law enforcement personnel of his/her last known location.

 

c. After situation is under control, law enforcement personnel on the scene will determine if arrest of the responsible person/s is necessary.
