It has been one year since the Kilbuck fire broke out in the early morning hours of November 3, 2015, displacing Ayaprun Elitnaurvik and Kuskokwim Learning Academy students. Forty KLA students who resided in the dorms at KLA had to flee the building, leaving their belongings behind, and approximately 200 students were suddenly without a place to learn.

Today, November 3, 2016, is a day to celebrate the dedication and resilience of our students and staff. After the fire, the response from the Bethel and statewide community has been tremendous. Organizations and individuals swept into action almost immediately with an outpouring of time, space, money and materials. This support continues today as the District moves toward rebuilding a new school to replace what was lost.

LKSD thanks all the people and organizations who donated in so many ways to make this a day we can look back and not reflect on the tragedy, but praise ourselves for moving forward gracefully and accomplishing many successes.
