The BRHS FLL Robotics team, known as the Moosekateers, is taking off to compete in the FLL North American Open Championship in San Diego, CA this weekend. Please check out this article by Coach Nicole Smith, outlining the team's success at the Alaska State Championships in January, which earned them their spot at this national competition:

The Moosekateers, a First Lego League team, were standing on the line ready to begin their 3rd robot round.  Crash!  Boom!  Our jig dropped to the floor.  It burst into six pieces.  Without the jig, we don’t know exactly where to place Bullwinkle the Robot in base so he can run the missions.  And our next turn at the table starts in 2 minutes.  We drop to the floor and begin to move the jig pieces around like a puzzle.  The robot round is ready to start.  The judges are wondering where our team went.  They wait for us to put the jig back together.  Yes!!  We have the jig back together and the robot round can begin.

The crowd counts down -- 3,  2, 1, Lego!!  Bullwinkle moves out of base and completes 7 missions before time runs out.  We got 119 points!!  Our best round yet.

Although we were a disappointing three points shy of being in the final showdown, our display of teamwork and problem solving skills, along with the robot programming, and the creation of a webpage for the Municipality of Anchorage on knowing what to do if you encounter a moose on the loose as you use the trails in the parks around Anchorage, helped us win 2nd place in the First Lego League Alaska State Rendezvous.  The Moosekateers, team 26969, have the privilege of representing the state of Alaska in the FLL North American Open Championship competition May 19-21st in San Deigo, California.  We will compete against 74 other teams from around the U.S. and a few international.

Since returning from State competition, the Mooskateers have been busy at work, totally revamping their robot body to make it even easier to switch out attachments.  They have added on more sophisticated sensors and with it, expanded their programming. Their team goal for next year is to share what they have learned about the sensors, programming, and tournament experiences with other robotics teams around the district so all  teams can be pushing themselves to learn more and become better.

Our big goal this  year was to push ourselves to the next level of competition and we have!!  We are so excited and look forward to sharing with everyone when we get back.

Please join us in wishing the Moosketeers good luck!
